Baker Tilly’s Colleen Lewis Named Institute of Internal Auditors Chapter President

TYSONS, VA (July 13, 2016) – Accounting and advisory firm Baker Tilly Virchow Krause, LLP (Baker Tilly) is pleased to announce that Colleen Lewis, CPA, CIA, CFE, a manager in Baker Tilly’s governance, risk and compliance practice, was recently inducted as president of the Institute of Internal Auditors’ (IIA) Northern Virginia chapter. In this role, she will work to further the organization’s mission to provide education, certification, guidance and industry standards for auditors worldwide.

Lewis has served the IIA as the organization’s vice president of programs and, most recently, president-elect. She attributes her success to her leadership approach and experience gained from her college athletic career.

“Playing soccer at the University of Maryland taught me the importance of working together to meet challenges,” Lewis said. “I’ve tried to bring that same level of teamwork to the IIA.”

Lewis has led outreach and recruiting efforts at the IIA, building support from Baker Tilly and other firms. Baker Tilly has increased the number of participants at IIA events, and Lewis has helped make the local chapter one of the largest in the country.

Lewis is one of the youngest officers in the chapter’s history and was recently nominated for a 2016 Virginia Society of Certified Public Accountants (VSCPA) Distinguished CPA Top 5 Under 35 Award. The nomination noted the many initiatives and programs she leads, including mentoring new hires at Baker Tilly and designing orientation programs, working with the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners, coaching accountants who are studying for certification programs and working as a firm ambassador to raise awareness of CPAs in area schools.

Lewis’ commitment to the community also includes advocating for financial literacy by teaching young children the basics of finance and working with young entrepreneurs in Junior Achievement. She is also active in Baker Tilly’s Growth and Retention of Women (GROW) program, which promotes the career development of women leaders in accounting, consulting and business professions.

“Colleen has demonstrated strong leadership and dedication since she started her career at Baker Tilly,” Baker Tilly Partner and National GRC Practice Leader Raina Rose Tagle, CPA, CISA, CIA, said. “The IIA couldn’t have a stronger, more passionate and skilled advocate than Colleen to lead the Northern Virginia chapter’s initiatives.”
