Cybersecurity Training Programs to Protect Company Data Only Implemented in 53 Percent of Companies

CHICAGO (April 25, 2017) – A poll conducted by Baker Tilly Virchow Krause, LLP (Baker Tilly) indicates only half of companies give information security training programs high priority and establish sufficient cybersecurity training programs within their organizations.

“Around 70 percent of data breaches are caused by human error,” Russ Sommers, CPA, CISA, senior manager with Baker Tilly’s financial services risk and internal audit practice, said. “This is why a cybersecurity training program is vital for establishing internal controls to protect sensitive information.”

“Cybersecurity as a whole is complex and rapidly evolving,” Christopher Tait, MBA, CISA, CFSA, CCSK, HITRUST CCSFP, principal with Baker Tilly’s financial services risk and internal audit practice, said. “Companies need to consistently evaluate topics with a holistic view of their organization’s needs when constructing an in-house training program.”

Baker Tilly recently held an educational webinar, “The finalized NY DFS cybersecurity regulations: The 12 month transition,” to assist financial services organizations in understanding the final cybersecurity regulations, specifically covering what companies should be doing now to prepare for requirements effective March 1, 2018.

The webinar presenters discussed:

  • An overview of the NY DFS cybersecurity law
  • Requirements in effect now
  • Regulations with a March 1, 2018 effective date
  • Future transition periods
