Honor recognizes five decades of leadership in civic and professional organizations
TYSONS, Va. (November 10, 2017) – Barbara McDuffie, managing director of business development with Baker Tilly Virchow Krause, LLP (Baker Tilly), was honored by the March of Dimes as a 2017 Heroines of Washington finalist. The annual event, held on November 2, recognizes women in the D.C. Metro Area for dedication to community service.
“It’s no secret in the D.C. community that Barbara is a powerhouse,” Todd Stokes, Baker Tilly’s office managing partner – D.C. Metro Area, said. “Her outstanding leadership in both civic and professional organizations has touched the lives of many, and we’re proud to see her recognized among this elite group.”
McDuffie’s history of community service started in 1979, when living in Hawaii. She co-founded the Kauai Outdoor Circle to preserve the island. Later, while living in Europe, she became involved with several volunteer organizations, including the American University in Paris and The Helen Keller Association. She also developed an overseas support group for the National Museum for Women in the Arts in D.C.
In 2005, she co-founded Women & Wine, an annual fundraiser that supports breast cancer research at the Georgetown Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center. One hundred women attended the inaugural event, which raised $65,000. This year 650 women attended and raised $560,000. To date the event has raised more than $2.6 million, which has generated nearly $7 million in additional funding from government and private foundations.
When Chip Akridge approached Congress in 2007 about a partnership to restore the National Mall, McDuffie encouraged him to raise funds through a corporate committee. Together, they recruited committee members, and more than 300 corporations have contributed $50 million to date.
“I have always enjoyed helping to make a difference,” McDuffie, who has held multiple board-level positions for both national and local organizations, including NAIOP, the Commercial Real Estate Development Association; the 2030 Group; Tysons Partnership; and Commercial Real Estate Women (CREW), said. “While it’s an honor to be recognized among these outstanding women, it is also a testament to the many dedicated individuals with whom I’ve collaborated over the years.”
Since 2001 the March of Dimes has honored 101 “heroines” and raised more than $2.5 million to improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects, premature birth and infant mortality.
