Baker Tilly and NACD Host Roundtable on Successful Transition of Executive Leadership

Corporate director forum will feature Baker Tilly CEO Alan Whitman discussing best practices for effective CEO transitions

NEW YORK (October 26, 2016) – Nationally recognized accounting and advisory firm Baker Tilly Virchow Krause, LLP (Baker Tilly) announced the roundtable “Successfully Transitioning Executive Leadership: One Shot to Get It Right,” with the National Association of Corporate Directors (NACD), the standard setter for board leadership.

Alan Whitman became Baker Tilly’s chairman and CEO in June 2016 after serving as the firm’s CEO-elect for approximately one year. Whitman will discuss key aspects of a successful CEO transition including the selection process, communications and, importantly, the critical role played by an organization’s board of directors.

"Baker Tilly developed a well-designed succession plan that enabled a smooth leadership transition," Whitman said. “The approach allowed me to focus on firm performance and the firm to fully embrace this notable change. We are excited to share Baker Tilly’s recent leadership transition experience and best practices with NACD and its members.”

The peer exchange, already at full capacity, will examine the key features of a well-executed executive leadership transition, namely:

  • The importance of process
  • Understanding the role of the board
  • Celebrating the organization
  • Communicating and pursuing the new leader’s vision
  • The outgoing CEO’s role

“We are pleased to bring this valuable leadership discussion to our membership to help enhance board performance during a potentially disruptive time in any organization,” NACD Chief Marketing Officer Henry Stoever said. “Baker Tilly offers a unique, board-centric view on this change management issue having recently successfully transitioned its CEO role to Alan Whitman. Alan will bring of-the-moment clarity to the discussion and help boards consider sustainable, long-term leadership transition approaches.”

NACD is a not-for-profit membership organization for corporate board members, providing the information and insights that board members need to confidently navigate business challenges and enhance shareowner value.

The roundtable will be Thursday, Oct. 27, 2016, at The University Club in New York City.
