IT has become essential to the ability of higher education institutions to educate and support students, conduct research and perform administrative functions. The rapid evolution of IT has increased the cybersecurity risks to your institution because of the quantity, capability, complexity, connectivity and mobility of the systems, applications, devices and IT services used to continue and further the institution’s mission.

Those cyber risks are expanded by various threats. First, cyber criminals want to steal information about your institution’s students, faculty, staff, alumni and donors for identity theft. Criminals also want to extort money from your institution via ransomware that takes your systems hostage. Second, human error or careless actions could unintentionally expose hundreds of thousands of data records about employees, students and research activities. Lastly, third-party vendors you rely on may not be adequately protecting your institution’s systems and data.

But hope is not lost. Your institution is likely already spending money and dedicating resources to fend off these attacks and protect your systems and data. So how do you know your institution is doing the right things for cybersecurity?

Raina Rose Tagle, CPA, CISA, CIA, Partner
Raina has nearly 25 years of experience in providing internal audit and consulting services, including IT audits and risk assessments, to higher education institutions. She serves as National Practice Leader of Baker Tilly’s Governance, Risk, and Compliance practice as well as its Higher Education Consulting practice, which include more than 200 professionals providing services in areas such as internal audit, enterprise risk management (ERM), financial and operational risk management, research compliance, fraud investigation, cybersecurity and IT risk, international operations, and construction. She frequently contributes to higher education thought leadership and presents at industry conferences, including the Association of College and University Auditors (ACUA), Association of Governing Boards of University and College Trustees (AGB), National Association of College and University Business Officers (NACUBO), and The National Council of University Research Administrators (NCURA).

Mike Cullen, CISA, CISSP, CIPP/US, Senior Manager
Mike leads the firm's Higher Education and Research Institution's cybersecurity and IT risk team. For over 15 years, he has worked with a variety of higher education institutions with various missions, both public and private. Mike has significant experience leading and executing IT risk assessments, myriad IT internal audits, various IT consulting projects, and multiple IT compliance reviews. He has also led strategic IT reviews, cybersecurity assessments, information privacy reviews, application audits, development of IT processes/policies/procedures, digital forensic investigations, and IT governance evaluations. Mike has presented to a variety of audiences, including Association of College and University Auditors (ACUA), National Association of College and University Business Officers (NACUBO) regional associations CACUBO (Central) and EACUBO (Eastern), National Council of University Research Administrators (NCURA), Society of Corporate Compliance and Ethics (SCCE), various Institute for Internal Auditors (IIA) chapters, regional, national conferences, and at multiple universities.
