John Hoffman is a director leading the Historic Tax Credit practice with Baker Tilly Virchow Krause, LLP. He has more than 20 years of experience in the fixed asset tax credit and incentive area including New Markets Tax Credits (NMTC), affordable housing and renewable energy. He formerly led Baker Tilly’s cost segregation practice and has consulted on properties and portfolios ranging in value from less than $1 million to over $1 billion. John actively advises clients on green building energy efficient tax consulting incentives, real estate valuation, machinery and equipment valuation, property tax appeal and business incentives. Prior to joining Baker Tilly, he practiced at an international accounting firm and also spent several years as a real estate developer.

Experience

  • Consults on both federal and state Historic Tax Credit projects for a wide variety of clients and property types, which includes working on financial modeling and structuring, process consulting, determining eligible costs, securing equity and debt financing and preparing cost certifications
  • Provides development advisory services to clients for newly constructed or renovated properties and/or when acquiring existing properties
  • Consults on affordable housing and NMTC transactions
  • Consults on renewable energy projects such as wind farms, solar farms, biomass facilities, biogas digesters, geothermal and hydroelectric power facilities
  • Consults on cost segregation and related tax consulting analyses of all property types
  • Conducts analyses to support accounting method changes for tax credit and fixed asset issues
  • Provides support for Internal Revenue Service inquiries and defends audits of tax credit and incentive, valuation and related tax matters
